Data protection using OmniPass and Secure Drive

Internet is now being used by many people around the world and one can contact to any person 100 miles away in a few seconds with the help of e-mails.

With an increase in the Internet users there has also been cases of the user’s identity being used by an illegitimate user to access authorized user’s account on the Internet. This can result into loss of personal information or data to the user.

This unauthenticated access to personal information or data can be avoided by the use of some security device which helps the authorized user to protect his data by the means of authentication and authorization. Authentication and authorization helps the user to be assured that his/her data will be protected from being accessed by an unauthorized user.

There are various authentication devices in the market which helps the user to authenticate itself with the device and protect the personal data by encrypting it in some form which is not understood or is not readable by the unauthorized user.

Biometric authentication is a security solution which helps the user’s to use their finger print scan for authentication purpose and use the machine to access the applications on the machine. Biometric authentication does not allow unauthorized user’s to get an access to the authorized user’s data as access will not be granted because of the finger print scan mismatch.

Softex has developed two security products which supports biometric authentication that will help user’s to be assured that their data will be secured. OmniPass security solution has multiple layers for authenticating the user. OmniPass is a security product which authenticates the user based on the password and a finger print scan.

This increases the security of the data on the computer as unauthorized user cannot get access until correct match of password and finger print scan is achieved. When the user is authenticated by the OmniPass the user is granted an access to the machine.

OmniPass works as a Single-Sign-On by authenticating the users with the bio metric authentication device for getting access to all the applications/software solutions running on the machine. Until both password and finger print scan does not match the one stored in the database user is not given access to the machine.

OmniPass remembers the passwords of various applications used by the user on OmniPass enabled machine. This reduces the overhead of the user to remember all the passwords.

Similarly when the user logs out of the machine the user is automatically signed out of OmniPass and all the applications running on the machine. The user is not needed to sign in or sign out separately from each of the applications.

OmniPass is incorporated with a solution for protecting the data on the machine when the user is not near to the machine. When the user is not available on desk for some specified time period the computer will automatically lock and will only be accessible when the user swipes the finger on the finger print scanner or the bio metric authentication device.

There are many cases around the globe about a missing computer/laptop which had many personal details of the clients or users of the company to which that laptop belonged. Once lost these laptops are rarely found. Machines even though are password protected pose a risk to the user’s personal data as passwords can be cracked with the help of password crackers.

Users are the one who have to suffer because of such incidents. They have to continuously keep monitoring their accounts for any abnormal activity. This is a tedious job for the user.

Softex has developed a solution for avoiding such risk’s known as Secure Drive. OmniPass protects self encrypting drives by means of strong authentication such as a password and a bio metric finger print scan.

For using the functions of Secure Drive the user has to first authenticate itself to the computer with the help of OmniPass i.e. without authenticating with OmniPass the user cannot get access to the Secure Drive for encrypting or decrypting the data stored on the machine.

Secure Drive helps to secure the boot sector of the user’s computer by asking the user to authenticate during the booting period of the computer. Secure Drive works as a self encrypting drive i.e. it encrypts the data (file or folder) while being saved by the user on the machine.

Thus OmniPass and Secure Drive help user’s data on a portable device such as a laptop to be protected from being misused by unauthorized user.
