Single Sign-On is a way of identification and authorization of users only once and granting the user access to all the applications which are registered for that user. This is a new generation technique which is the safest way for user authentication and authorization.
User can gain an access to all the applications with a Single Sign-On and will not be prompted every time the application needs to be accessed by the user. Single Sign-On technique stores the credentials for the user at the time of registration and uses them at the time of authorization to automatically enter the user details.
OmniPass is a software security solution developed by Softex Inc. which supports Single Sign-On. OmniPass software makes use of a biometric device such as fingerprint scan from companies such as AuthenTec, Validity, UPEK etc for taking a fingerprint scan of the user. OmniPass stores the associated fingerprint scan with the user in the database and uses it for further authentication process of the user.
OmniPass user does not need to remember any passwords and just needs to scan its finger to identify itself with the machine. After registering the application with a fingerprint to OmniPass the user is given a window which indicates the user to scan its finger on the biometric device. When a perfect match is found access to the machine is given else the window will give a message that user authentication failed and user needs to authenticate again.
Benefits of Single Sign-On include:
- Phishing attacks are reduced as users are not needed to enter passwords everywhere
- Users are not needed to remember username and passwords for the process of authorization
- User does not need to enter password for every application thus reducing the overall user time
- Single Sign-On supports traditional method of authentication which consists of username and password and also biometric authentication
- Help desk call are reduced which indirectly reduces the IT costs
- Access security for all the applications on all levels of the organization
User can register all the applications with OmniPass and use just a fingerprint to access all the applications which were registered. Thus OmniPass users are not needed to remember any passwords for identification process. OmniPass supports Single Sign-On and can hence be beneficial for the organization in identifying the users in a more secure manner and also reducing the costs incurred by the IT.
