Multifactor Authentication Mechanisms

There are increasing number of thefts related to computer data and there is an increase in the number of security mechanisms for protecting the computer data from unauthorized access.

There are many ways of authenticating the users for granting them an access to the computer. Depending on the priority for securing the data there can be one or multiple ways of authenticating the users.

Users are given login-password for authentication. This is the basic form of authenticating the user and has many concerns of login-password being known by the unauthorized user.

Multifactor Authentication makes use of more than one way of authenticating the user. In this technique users are authenticated based not only on the login-password but also some thing else which the user actually possesses such as a smart card or who the user actually is such as a fingerprint or retina scan. Multifactor authentication uses a unique way of identifying a user and granting him/her access to the machine.

Multifactor authentication can make use of two or all the authentication ways mentioned above for authenticating the user. This helps the authorized user to be assured that his/her data will be protected from any misuse.

OmniPass is a solution for password management, login security and data protection which makes use of multifactor authentication by supporting multi-device and multi-factor authentication including Biometrics, Smart Cards, and Hardware Tokens etc. OmniPass reduces the risk of storing many passwords as it can use multifactor authentication to authenticate the user.

OmniPass deploys multifactor authentication in multiple ways such as using login-password and a fingerprint scan for the user authentication purpose. Enterprise users of OmniPass can take advantage of authentication rules for the users using a console provided to the Administrator.

Using the Omnipass Enterprise Edition the Administrator can set rules for all the users on how they are going to authenticate themselves to access the machine. The Enterprise Administrator can select different devices for authenticating the user with any one of the device or combination of devices.

If the Enterprise user selects a device and sets its rule to pass for its verification process then the user will have to authenticate itself with that device for getting an access to the machine. There are also options such as AND, OR, etc available for the Enterprise user to select one or more than one device for the user to authenticate himself with those devices to get an access to the machine.

OmniPass supports a large variety of fingerprint scan devices manufactured by different companies such as Authentic, UPEK, Digital Persona, Atmel, Validity, Fujitsu, etc. These devices now come in a small size which are portable as well as attached in the laptop computers.

There are many new technologies coming in the market day by day. OmniPass is scalable enough to support these new technologies and helps to incorporate these technologies into the OmniPass Framework. OmniPass is thus a very beneficial product developed by Softex.
